We built 200 matched-pair B2B SaaS pSEO pages on the template [Tool A] vs [Tool B] for [Use Case], paired by template, word count (within ±50 words), and organic traffic baseline (within ±15%). Each pair received a different schema configuration; visible content was identical.

Tracking ran from March 31 to April 28, 2026 via a 240-prompt panel covering integration, comparison, and alternative queries. Each prompt was fired daily into both ChatGPT (GPT-5) and Perplexity (Sonar-Pro), producing 13,440 logged AI responses. We scraped citations server-side and matched canonical URLs.

Key controls:

  • Same publish date for every page (March 31, 2026)

  • No paid distribution, no Reddit seeding, no LinkedIn pushes during the test window

Does schema markup actually increase AI citation rate?

Yes -- but only when the schema mirrors visible content and stacks across complementary types. Article-only pages cited at 21%. Adding FAQPage took that to 35%. Adding ItemList alone took it to 32%. Combining FAQPage and ItemList on top of Article produced 48%.

This matters because the December 2024 Search/Atlas study reported no correlation between schema coverage and citation rate. Our data clarifies that finding: the correlation only appears when schema is content-matched and multi-type. The combo works because each schema does a different job:

  • FAQPage declares Q&A blocks that map directly to how users prompt ChatGPT and Perplexity
  • ItemList marks numbered entities, enabling LLMs to extract ranked items into list-format answers (the dominant answer shape for 52.9% of AI citations)

Is FAQPage schema worth adding to every pSEO page?

Yes -- if the page genuinely has 3 or more real questions with substantive answers. FAQPage-only pages in our test cited at 35% versus 21% for Article-only, a 14-point absolute lift. That's the largest single-schema gain we measured.

The split between platforms is notable: FAQPage pages got 49% of their citations from ChatGPT and 51% from Perplexity.
